We are excited to announce that Lacombe County was chosen as one of six municipalities selected to participate in the 2022 Municipal Energy Champions (MEC) program.
The Municipal Energy Champions (MEC) program is a free program put on by the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre. The program supports municipal staff in becoming Energy Champions. With the involvement of the Lacombe County Environmental Coordinator, the MEC program will identify new ways to manage municipal energy use, as well as opportunities to reduce energy consumption and save money, and ways to build and implement these programs in the future.
“Lacombe County understands the importance of being an environmental leader. Being selected as a Municipal Energy Champion will complement the many programs and initiatives that we have underway,” said Reeve Barb Shepherd.
About the Municipal Energy Champions (MEC) Program
The MEC program offers free support for municipalities interested in developing Municipal Energy Champions. Education delivery, technical support, and coaching methods will be used over a 9-month period to build the municipality’s internal capacity to better manage and reduce its energy consumption.
The Municipal Climate Change Action Centre will support the municipality through the delivery of a step-by-step program where participating municipalities will:
- Complete a baseline assessment.
- Have all relevant municipal staff and council learn the basics of energy management.
- Gather preliminary data of municipal energy consumption and define a scope of analysis.
- Develop an energy profile for the defined scope of work.
- Understand energy consumption trends in municipal facilities and how to look for energy efficiency improvements.
- Present findings to all relevant municipal staff and council.
- Learn how to construct an implementation plan and move forward in the energy management process.
